Very cool.... similar to one of the styles I use..... though I generally prefer to manually add shadows rather than using masks.....

Unless I'm doing more complex stuff.

"trying" only ends in two things, failure or success, but it in the trying itself where the true learning is adquired!

Nifty idea... I'll have to consider this. I'm more of a traditional artist, and while I've done =some= CG work, I'm not all that practiced at it.

You can look for the good things in life or the sucky; be certain that whatever you're looking for will show itself.

What I also do in Photoshop is make the basic image its own layer, set its mode to 'Multiply,' and then put my colors below it on another layer.

By setting the outlines layer to Multiply, any area on that layer that is black will remain visible, but any area that is white will show whatever colors are on the layers below instead - essentially this turns your white areas transparent. That way you can paint your colors a little more freely without having to worry about overwriting your lines (since they're on a different layer, they're 'protected' as you draw).

I also generally keep the colors for different areas on their own layers so I don't accidentally mess with colors that I've already laid down in a different area.

Dodge and Burn add highlights and shadows to a colored portion of your image. Useful for adding shadows without having to "guess" what color to make them - it simply darkens what you already have there. Same goes for the Dodge tool - it simply "lightens" the existing image information. Experiment on a photograph or something to see what the different modes do (each tool has a "Shadow", "Midtones", and "Highlights" setting that will affect the colors in different ways).
